The Perfect Iceland Itinerary | 3 Days in Iceland
Iceland is one of those magical places that seem to be on everyone's bucket list and why wouldn't it be. There are so many naturally beautiful sites to see; gorgeous waterfalls, dormant volcanos and let us not forget about the Northern Lights. Because there are so many places to see and stops along the way, you will want to have a plan to help maximize your time. Whether you are looking to visit Iceland on a budget or want to splurge on an epic day trip, I have the perfect itinerary for you.
Day 1 - Journey to Vik

Rent a car and head over to the Black Sand beach in Vik. The trip is only about 2 hours from Reykjavik, the country's capital and the city most people choose to stay in. On the way to the Black Sand beach, you will find a few places you will want to stop and see!
.Ægissíðufoss Waterfall

Skógafoss

Don’t forget to watch the road, these sheep like to get out of their pins.

Sólheimajökull

Day 2 - The Blue Lagoon & The Golden Circle
Although the Blue Lagoon is a major tourist attraction, I still suggest going. It's a wonderful way to start your day especially if you traveled the day before. Buy your ticket online in advance to ensure you get a time you want. The earlier you go the less crowded it is and the sooner you can start your road trip around the Golden Circle.

The Golden Circle is about 237 kilometers starting in Reykjavik and circling into the southern uplands of Iceland and back. It's about 3 1/2 hours but remember to give yourself plenty of time to enjoy each stop. The route is gorgeous and you may want to make a few unexpected stops along the way. Depending on your length of stay and budget, your choice of attractions may vary. Here are a few stops along the Golden Circle.
Thingvellir (Þingvellir) National Park (Gjabakkahellir Cave)
National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site
Althing, the World's First Parliament
Geology at Thingvellir
Silfra Fissure (the most unique diving and snorkeling site in the world)
Geysir Geothermal Field
The Great Geysir
Strokkur Geyser
Geology at the Geysir Geothermal Field
Hydrology at Geysir Geothermal Field
Gullfoss Waterfall
Kerið Volcanic Crater
The Secret Lagoon

The Great Geyser

Gullfoss Waterfall

Kerið Volcanic Crater

Keep your eyes peeled while on the road. You just might find a few hungry horses waiting to be fed and pet!
Day 3 - Laxnes Horse Farm & Thrihnukagigur volcano
The highlight of our my trip was day 3. My husband surprised me by starting the day with horseback riding. This was my first experience and it was such a memorable one. The tour starts with a short tutorial and off you go. You ride through the countryside, along steep cliffs, and stop to see one of Iceland's many beautiful waterfalls. I can't recommend this tour enough!

If your trip lands in Iceland's summer months, you're in luck. For a short period of time in the summer, Thrihnukagigur volcano offers an Inside the Volcano tour. You start with a short hike up to the volcano and descend 120 meters into the earth. Afterward, you are treated to soup and a hot beverage. After your journey into the very chilly volcano, that hot soup and beverage is a godsend.
